US Department of State urges American citizens worldwide to “exercise caution”

The US Department of State has urged American citizens worldwide to “exercise increased caution” amid the war against Iran. An account on the X platform (formerly Twitter) affiliated with the US State Department posted: “U.S. diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, have been targeted.” It continued saying that groups supporting Iran may target other American interests abroad or sites associated with the United States and Americans worldwide. The State Department added that periodic airspace closures may cause travel disruptions and that Americans abroad should follow the instructions provided in security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. This “Worldwide Caution” follows a series of cyber and physical threats against US interests in Europe and Asia, which intelligence agencies link to Tehran’s “asymmetric warfare” strategy aimed at pressuring Washington during the five-day strike pause. Since the war began on February 28, the State Department has issued Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisories for several countries in the Middle East due to the high risk of regional spillover and spontaneous protests near diplomatic compounds.
