The Social Solidarity Ministry, in cooperation with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), organized on Thursday a ceremony to launch social protection report.

Titled “Social Protection: Reality and Horizons – A National Review of the System and Reforms in Egypt”, the report uses a precise methodology to analyze both contributory and non-contributory social protection programs, said Raafat Shafiq, Assistant Social Solidarity Minister for Social Protection, at the ceremony.

It also reviews legal frameworks, covering legislation such as social insurance laws, as well as economic empowerment mechanisms and strategic financial systems launched by the Ministry of Social Solidarity.

Shafiq emphasized the importance of creating an integrated national framework for social protection in Egypt, aligning with the country’s sustainable development goals. The government aims to enhance social protection mechanisms to support vulnerable populations and reduce multidimensional poverty.

He also pointed out the coordination between various ministries including social solidarity, labor, health, education, and housing, among others.

The report presents key findings and practical solutions, including how to integrate informal sector workers into social insurance schemes.

The discussions during the launch event contributed to shaping actionable steps toward a more inclusive and effective social protection system in Egypt.

The report’s release marks the culmination of two years of systematic analysis aimed at expanding the coverage of social insurance to informal sector workers.
