Egypt pursues efforts to get information about Egyptians missing in Libya

3 min

Egypt continues its communications and high-level efforts with its brothers in Libya to get information about the missing Egyptian citizens, assess their conditions, and take the necessary measures to determine their fate.

These efforts are being exerted through intensive and direct coordination between the Egyptian Embassy in Tripoli, the Egyptian Consulate General in Benghazi, and full cooperation with the relevant Libyan authorities, with the involvement of the specialized sectors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This reflects the priority of this issue and Egypt’s commitment to monitoring the situation of its citizens abroad without exception.

These efforts have already yielded tangible results, including the successful repatriation of 131 Egyptian citizens from a detention center in Libya on November 27, 2025, following intensive and continuous efforts made by the Egyptian Embassy in Tripoli in coordination with the relevant Libyan authorities, which led to their release and facilitated their safe return to Egypt.

Additionally, since the beginning of this year, 1,132 Egyptian citizens have been repatriated from Tripoli and the western region, and more than 1,500 citizens from Benghazi and the eastern region, as part of Egypt’s ongoing efforts.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to hold regular and intensive meetings with the families of the missing citizens, in an effort to keep them informed of the latest developments.

On December 21, 2025, Ambassador Hisham Al-Gohari, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Consular Affairs, met with more than 200 family members of the missing, where they discussed the efforts being made and the ongoing communications with the relevant authorities, and addressed their inquiries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that Egypt’s efforts remain continuous and uninterrupted, in close coordination with the Libyan side, to determine the fate of every Egyptian citizen and take the necessary steps to ensure their safety, leaving no effort spared in this regard.

The Egyptian Embassy in Greece has also been instructed to follow up on the incident of the sinking of an illegal immigration boat heading to Greece on December 7, 2025, and to engage at the highest level with Greek authorities to provide possible support to the families of the victims and offer all necessary consular and humanitarian assistance.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs urge citizens who wish to inquire or provide any information regarding missing citizens to contact the Ministry’s central hotline at: (00201226858000), to receive reports and inquiries around the clock, in order to support the ongoing efforts to clarify the situation of the missing citizens.
