Egypt’s national carrier, EgyptAir, issued a formal clarification on Saturday addressing reports circulating on social media regarding a spike in airfares for citizens returning from Gulf nations. The airline dismissed the claims as “inaccurate,” asserting that its current operational policies are designed to prioritize the safe and affordable return of Egyptians stranded by current regional instability. Prioritizing stranded passengers In response to the widespread cancellation of flights across the Middle East, EgyptAir has implemented an emergency flight schedule. The airline emphasized that its primary focus is the repatriation of passengers who hold existing EgyptAir bookings. “Our priority is ensuring that citizens with valid tickets are returned home as quickly as possible without incurring any additional burdens or fees,” the company stated. In order to facilitate this, the airline has waived all ticket change penalties during this exceptional period. Operational constraints and “high-risk” costs The carrier noted that the number of available flights remains strictly limited, governed by the directives of civil aviation authorities in host countries and the prevailing security conditions. Addressing the pricing of the few remaining seats, EgyptAir clarified the following: Limited availability: Only five percent of total seat capacity is typically available for new purchases on these extraordinary flights. Market-based pricing: These remaining seats are priced in alignment with current market rates offered by other regional and international carriers. Rising overheads: The airline cited a sharp increase in insurance premiums due to the classification of certain regional corridors as “high-risk zones.” One-way logistics: Costs are further impacted by the fact that many of these repatriation aircraft fly “empty legs” from Cairo to the Gulf to collect passengers, doubling the operational cost per traveler. National responsibility EgyptAir reaffirmed its commitment to its “national role and responsibility” toward Egyptians abroad. The airline urged the public to rely on official channels for information, noting that the current seat scarcity is a direct result of geopolitical tensions and the necessary safety protocols mandated by aviation regulators.
